TERA’s Verifiable Estimates
for Risk Assessment (VERA)
program is designed to develop independent, neutral, science-based risk
assessment values and characterizations of risks.
Because risk assessment methodologies are constantly evolving and
improving, and new epidemiology, toxicology, and mechanistic data are
frequently published new or updated risk estimates are needed for many
chemicals. TERA
scientists develop chemical risk assessments through a detailed
understanding of current risk assessment methods, expertise in toxicology
and environmental health, and by actively interacting with and building
partnerships among interested parties.
TERA offers risk assessment
expertise in each of the following areas.
·
Comprehensive
Dose-Response Assessments and Toxicological Reviews.
TERA staff have detailed
understanding of cutting-edge science and how it is applied practically in
risk assessment. Our staff
have developed or reviewed the documentation for hundreds of non-cancer and cancer risk
assessment values. Program
activities include developing EPA IRIS Toxicological Reviews, EPA Drinking
Water Criteria Documents, and derivation of RfDs, RfCs, cancer
assessments, and acute toxicity values for private sponsors.
·
Screening
Level Assessments. Frequently,
risk management decisions have to be made based on only limited toxicity
data or with very rapid turnaround times. TERA staff bring a high
degree of expertise to screening level assessment projects to ensure that
scientific analyses based on limited data lead to sound judgments.
· Occupational
Toxicology. TERA
staff derive and review health-based occupational exposure limits,
including traditional OELs and acute emergency exposure values.
We have direct knowledge and experience using the approaches
employed by OEL-setting bodies, and can apply advanced risk
methods in deriving OELs and in providing analysis of occupational risks.
·
Product
and Site Risk Support. TERA
provides toxicology support for product safety evaluations and
environmental site-related risks. Detailed
risk characterizations are developed through partnerships with our
extensive network of international experts to integrate TERA’s
toxicology expertise with advanced exposure and ecological assessment
resources.
