Resorcinol Peer Review Meeting Logistics

Location:  University of Cincinnati, Kingsgate Conference Center, Cincinnati, OH

Dates:  March 18-19, 2003

An expert peer panel will review a document entitled “Description of a Proposed Reference Dose for Resorcinol”.  This document was prepared by AMEC Earth and Environmental, Inc on behalf of the sponsor, Beazer East, Inc.  Beazer East, Inc. was formerly known as Koppers Company, Inc. Prior to 1988, Koppers Company Inc. owned and operated a facility that manufactured resorcinol.

This document reviews both the human and animal toxicological studies of resorcinol with the purpose of deriving a Reference Dose (RfD). A chronic feeding study in rats was selected as the critical study for derivation of an RfD, with mortality selected as the critical effect. The NOAEL of 100 mg/kg-day was adjusted to estimate a continuous dose of 71 mg/kg-day. An uncertainty factor of 1000 was selected (10 each to account for inter- and intra-species variability and completeness of the database).  Thus the estimated RfD for resorcinol is 71 ÷ 1000, or 0.07 mg/kg-day.  With high confidence in the critical study and medium confidence in the database, the overall confidence in the RfD is medium.
